Edwin was related to a number of distinguished Colonial Virginia families. His first wife (nee Anne Ball) was half-sister of Mary (Ball) Washington, making Edwin and Anne Conway uncle and aunt of President George Washington.
Edwin was also a great-uncle of President James Madison. According to Edwin's biography by Hayden, wife Anne died and he remarried to Anne Hack. Edwin was a long-time burgess representing Lancaster County.
