He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Susanna Gibbons, who he married on 16 SEP 1815 in Frederick County, VA. Their eight known children were Francis Ashbury (1816-1888), Lydia Margaret (c1827-1897), Albert C. (1818->1900), Thomas B. (1820-1898), Mary Susan (c1823-1898), Matilda C. (c1825-1890), Robert (1831-c1915) and Martha Amanda (1833-1912).
His second wife was Sarah Russell, who he married on 15 DEC 1791 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Their nine known children were Jane (c1794-?), Elizabeth (c1795-?), Benjamin (c1796-?), William (1799-1885), James (c1803-?), Joseph Alfred (c1805-1880), Nancy (c1806-?), Richard (c1809-?) and John Wesley (1810-1892).

There are many suggestions that Joseph Whittington's parents are Richard Benjamin Whittington and Mary Elizabeth Mercer. I have no proof and have not added them as Joseph's parents. The only documentation I am aware of is contained on Joseph Whittington's person page in Family Tree.
