He was a maltster (managing the process of malting barley) by trade, made a Freeman of the Colony on 18 May 1653 at Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony and one of the Selectman in 1673.[1]

He was the father of twelve children with one wife Abigail Baxter. John Adams and Mary Adams died young. (Two later children who lived were named for John and Mary.)[5]
