Obituary

Woodrow Emmitt “Woodie” Grayson, Jr. 84-year-old longtime Vinita resident, passed away at his home on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 1, 1938, in Picher, Oklahoma to Woodrow Grayson, Sr. and Ola (Nyberg) Grayson. Woodie was married to Carol Louise (Burr) on January 2, 1958, in San Diego, California. Woodie proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era, achieving the rank of Corporal. After the service he went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, as Telephone Technician and later Manager. He retired after 29 years of service with the company. After retirement he contracted back to the company for another 11 years. Woodie loved boats, owning cruisers and houseboats, and being out on the lake. He also was a car buff and owned and operated Premier Motors in Vinita for a time. Woodie really enjoyed Oklahoma Sooner football, playing the organ, and fishing. Most of all he loved his family and family gatherings. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Vinita for over 50 years where he also sang in the choir.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert Grayson, brother in law, Bob Burr, and his son in law, Tracy Williams.

The family includes, his wife Carol of the home, children, Steve Grayson and wife Leslie of Broken Arrow, Judi Williams of Vinita, Tim Grayson of Broken Arrow, brother Paul Grayson and wife Donna of Cumming, Georgia, sister, Nancy Fry and husband Danny of St. Louis, Missouri, seven grandchildren, Courtney Reedy (Rachel), Lindsay Berg (Josh), Shelby Vancil (Cory), Megan Grayson, Michael Grayson, Paige Dixon (Kyle), Taylor Grayson, and seven great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Friends may give to Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Vinita.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the Burckhalter-Highsmith Funeral Home Chapel in Vinita. The celebration of life will be held on Monday, October 30, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Vinita, with Rev. Stephanie Crogan, and Rev. Andrew Haire officiating.
