Note 1

My 5th great grandfather

Lawrence Sidener (1760-1810) was the fifth child of Martin Seidner (d. 1806) who left Grünewörth [near Wertheim in the present state of Baden-Württemberg] on May 20, 1754 and arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship 'Phoenix' on October 1, 1754. It was said of Martin that he "has been left loaded with debts by his father, and wants to go with his wife and child to Pennsylvania. Has been brought to total ruin through so much interest money and now in his advancing years has become a beggar. Wants to see where else the Dear Lord will show him ways and means to earn his daily bread. Had 744 florins property and 657 florins debts." Martin Seidner eventually settled on Elk Creek in Fayette County, Kentucky.

Lawrence Sidener, born on July 8, 1760 in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was brought to Frederick County, Maryland by his parents in 1762. In 1786 his parents sold their farm six miles west of Hagerstown and relocated to Berkeley County, (West) Virginia. When the Sidener family migrated to Kentucky in 1796, Lawrence settled in Montgomery County, while his parents and siblings settled in the adjacent counties of Fayette and Bourbon. His primary property was located near the fork of Spencers and Harpers Creek, although he also owned land on Slate Creek.
