He married Margaret (“Peggy”) Brookshire. She was born 20 Feb. 1791 in Randolph Co., NC, died 26 March 1878, and was also buried in Cravens Cem. They moved to Indiana in 1829, going first to Montgomery Co. and then to Washington Co. in 1848 or 1849, settling 3 miles south of Salem. Later they moved to the northwest quarter, section 28, in what is now Pierce Township, which was their homestead. They apparently also lived for a time in Kentucky, since at least four of their children were born there, according to the 1850 census for Washington Co., IN. In the 1860 census, John and Margaret lived with their daughter Mary Graybill and her family in Jackson Twp., Washington Co., IN. In the 1870 census in Pierce, Washington Co., IN, John was recorded as John G., age 81; he was listed as a retired farmer. (R‑44, R‑201, R‑207, R‑210) Children - Graves 1. Martha Graves, b. Richard Graves, b. 12 Sept. 1816, m. Jane Williams, 6 (or 30) July 1840, d. after 1870. 5. Gillium Graves, was a school teacher. He had in his possession the Graves family manuscript. He was bur. on the family farm in section 28 or 33, Washington Co., IN. 6. Elizabeth Graves, b. 25 Jan. 1820 (possibly in Randolph Co., NC), m. Samuel H. Harshburger, 25 March 1839 (Montgomery Co., IN). The family moved to Missouri. 7. Mary Graves, b. 11 Oct. 1821, m. Manassah Graybill, 4 Nov. 1841, d. 3 Oct. 1889. 8. Thomas Graves, b. 21 April 1823, m(1) Amanda Cravens, 8 May 1850, m(2) Elizabeth Baker, 22 Jan. 1866, d. 22 April 1901. 9. Leonard Graves, b. 28 April 1825, m.
