Mary L. Sloan, 80, died on December 29, 2010, in Burlington, NC, following a brief illness. A native Tulsan, she was born November 23, 1930, to Harold and Dorothy Stunkard and lived in Tulsa until 2008, when she moved to Burlington to be near her children and grandchildren. Her husband of 57 years, Donald E. Sloan, died in Tulsa in 2007. Mary was a 1948 graduate of Will Rogers High School and attended Oklahoma State University. She worked primarily as a homemaker and was active for many years as a volunteer at Children’s Medical Center. She also volunteered at the Tulsa Center for the Physically Limited. Although she was living in Burlington, she re- mained an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. She is survived by her children, Kathleen Coles, her husband, Bob; Steve Sloan and his wife, Pam, all of Burlington, NC. Grandchildren are Danny, Brian and Adam Coles, and Shelby and Lindsey Sloan, also in Burlington; brothers Jim Stunkard and Bud Stunkard and his wife, Linda, of Tulsa; and beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 4, from 6 to 8 pm, at Floral Haven Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm, Wednesday, January 5, at First Presbyterian Church, 709 S. Boston Ave., Tulsa, OK 74119. Contributions may be made in her name to First Presbyterian Church. This obituary was published in the Tulsa World on 1/2/2011.
