Note 1
The following children are believed to be the children of Samuel and Zylphia, but only Mary Ann has been proven to be a child. According to R‑50, Samuel Sr. and Zylphia had a total of 11 children, eight born by 1800.
The 1790 census lists 2 sons and 1 daughter. The 2 sons were probably Samuel, Jr. and Gillum (thought by some to be a child of John and Margery Graves) Graves. The 1800 census lists 3 sons and 5 daughters. This son was probably John Graves who married Annie ("Jonsy") Spencer.
Samuel Graves, Sr. deeded 262 acres of land to John in 1822 (Bk. 17, p. 356) which was witnessed by Mark and Anney Bolling. Mark Bolling was the brother of Talitha who married Samuel, Jr. It is said that John could walk 1¼ miles from his house to the village of Seagrove where he sometimes served as a magistrate. Per R‑50, Jane Graves is a probable daughter but no information on a Henry Graves. R‑50 also suggests that some of the children attributed to Samuel Graves and Zylphia may actually be the children of Samuel Graves, Jr. (R‑9, R‑17, R‑44, R‑50, R‑201)
Note 2
Samuel Graves (2) was probably born before 1764/5 in Randolph Co., NC. The estimated date of birth is based on 1815 tax list, “0 poll tax,” making him over 50 years of age, or born by 1764/5. He died 1830-1840, possibly in Clay Co., IN, or while enroute. He married Zylphia Steed, daughter of Nathaniel Steed and Susannah Franklin of VA. Nathaniel Steed was the son of John Steed, Sr. and Ann Hill. Zylphia was born about 1762, and died in April 1850 in Van Buren Twp., Clay Co., IN. She was 88 when she died. (She was listed in the Mortality Book for 1850.) Samuel is said to have sold his land between 1815-1822 in preparation for his move to IN. By 1831 the family and many others started from Randolph Co., NC to Clay Co., IN by horseback train.
As written in R‑210 and per R‑2, Samuel Graves is mentioned in contemporary records as Samuel Graves Esquire. He may be placed in Randolph Co., NC by deeds of 1787, 1788 and 1791, a militia record of March 1789, census records of 1790, 1800, and 1810, marriage bonds of 1799 and 1819, court records of 1793 and bastardy bonds of 1812, 1814, 1835, and 1839, tax rolls of 1803, 1815 and 1820, and a voting roll of 1817. He was a constable in 1788. He owned considerable property, including 612 acres on the Little River, 250 acres on the Uharie River, and 100 acres on Reedy Creek.
