Notes

Note 1

Richard (“Dickey”) Graves (4) was born some time between 1765 to 1769[3], in Randolph Co., NC, and died 15 June 1849 in Randolph Co., NC.  Randolph Geneological Journal, Vol. 16, No. 3, p. 15, cites:  Richard Graves, 80 years old, d. June 1849 after a ten day illness; cf. 1850 Mortality Schedule of Randolph Co., NC.  He was buried in the original Graves Cemetery which is located in Randolph Co., ¼ mile west of State Road 134 and ¼ mile north of State Road 1118 on an unpaved road.  The graveyeard reportedly contains 19 graves.  R-50 states that according to some information, Richard and his wife were buried on land owned by their son, Samuel.  He married Hannah Fincher, daughter of Benjamin Fincher.  Benjamin was a Quaker, joining the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, Orange Co., NC, in 1755, with his family.  Hannah was born about 1769, listed as age 81 on the 1850 census, then living in the household of her son Samuel Graves.  She died 9 Nov. 1856 in NC at age 87.  They moved to the Seagrove area by 1794 and settled on Little River in the southern part of the county.  All their children were born in Randolph Co., although the information on their son Richard is just that he was born in NC.  Richard’s home plantation was purchased in 1794 from his brother, Leonard, who inherited the land in 1791 from his brother William Graves.  William had obtained the land by a 1787 grant from the state.  Richard then deeded this land in 1841 to his son Samuel.  Richard and Hannah moved in with Samuel and his wife Rachel.

The book Fincher in the USA, 1683-1900, compiled by Evelyn Davis Fincher and Ann Wilson Fincher, gives much information on the Fincher family.  Hannah Fincher is descended from Francis Fincher, a Quaker from Worcester, England, who arrived in Philadelphia, PA, 7 mo., 28th day, 1683 (May 28, 1683) aboard the ship “Bristol Comfort” accompanied by his second wife, Mary (Achelley) Fincher, his small children and servants.  The descent of Hannah was: Francis1, John2, Jonathan3, Benjamin4, Hannah5.  Benjamin was born about 1740 in Chester Co., PA, and died 19 March 1808 in Randolph Co., NC, leaving a wife, 2 sons, and 5 daughters.

As written in R‑210, Richard Graves may be placed in Randolph Co., NC by documentary evidence dating from 1785, including a signed petition, a law suit of 1789, census records of 1790, 1800, 1830, and 1840, deeds of 1791-1841, militia records of 1801-1802, a will of 1811, tax rolls of 1803, 1815, 1820, and 1828, voting records of 1817, and marriage bonds for his son Benjamin in 1822 and daughter Nancy in 1825.

Local Randolph Co. history gives information that two of Richard’s sons, Benjamin and Samuel, remained in NC and four other sons went West.  It is said thay had six boys and six girls in total.  According to R‑50, Mary Anne and Nancy are most often identified as daughters of Richard and Hannah, which is confirmed by letters and other information.  In addition to the children listed below, Cindy Holsapple-Boone says that Jane Graves (#16) who married Randolph Bowling was also a child of this Richard Graves.  However, R‑50 believes Jane is probably a daughter of Richard’s brother Samuel.  The birth order is unclear.  (R‑1, R‑4, R‑7, R‑12, R‑13, R‑29, R‑30, R‑31, R‑44, R‑50, R‑84, R‑85, R‑87, R‑89, R‑90, R‑201, R‑202, R‑210)
