His wife was Mary (Maude) Schwab, who he married on 22 MAY 1900 in Madison, Indiana. Their six known children were Erma M. (1901-1942), Joseph Earl (1903-1910), Gertrude Catherine (1908-2006), Ethel Irene (1912-2005), John Franklin (1917-1984) and Robert Joseph (1919-2007).

On US Dept. of Labor Naturalization Service form, he is described as fair complexion, 5' 10", 165 pounds. Brown hair, gray eyes and a scar on left cheek. This form was dated April 1, 1917 and stated that he immigrated to the US from Hamburg, Germany and arrived in New York on May 3, 1884.
